1. Translate the following
passage into English.
Answer : It became dark outside the room. But there was a soft and blue light inside the room, though I could not locate its source. Opposite to my entrance, there was a circular window, the shutters of which were made of glass or plastic. Besides, on the left and right side of the room, there were two circular doors, both of which were closed. The only furniture on the floor were about ten stool-like things which, though made of some transparent material, were quite strong.
2. Write a précis of the following passage and
add a suitable title.
Speech is a great blessing but it can also be a
great curse, for a while it help us to
make our intentions and desires known to our fellows, it can also, if we use it
carelessly, make our attitude completely misunderstood. A slip of the tongue,
the use of an unusual word, or of an ambiguous word, and so on, may create an
enemy where we had hoped to win a friend. Again, different classes of people
use different vocabularies, and the ordinary speech of an educated man may
strike an uneducated listener as showing pride; unwittingly we may use a word
which bears a different meaning to a listener from what it does to men of our
own class. Thus, speech is not a gift to use lightly without thought, but one
which demands careful handling; only a fool will express himself alike to all
kinds and conditions of men.
Answer :
The Power of Speech
The Power of Speech
Speech is a valuable gift. But it should be used carefully to express our thoughts and feelings; otherwise we may be misunderstood thereby making friends into foes. We should not ignore the fact that words do not always make the same meaning to the educated and uneducated man. Thus, great caution and tact must be taken while speaking.
SAY
NO TO POLYTHENE BAGS
Howrah:
7th March 2020.
With
the objective to make students and
people aware of the bad effect of polythene bags on environment, human beings
and animals, the Nandanik Samity of Gokul
Vihar organised a campaign named 'Say No to Polythene Bags' on 5th of
this month. The programme started with the informative lecture from the Word
Councilor. He said that polythene is non- biodegradable product and can't be eliminated
without damaging the environment. He further added that polythene bags cause
drainage problem and make the city ugly.
Besides
agreeing with the Word Councilor about the hazardous caused by polythene bags,
the Chief Guest stressed to use bags made of cloth, paper and jute. He admitted
that law couldn't do much in that regard, the ban must come from within.
Students
took out a rally carrying placards with various slogans in the locality. There
was enthusiasm among them and the people of the locality. Members of the Samity
visited the local people and shopkeepers
of the locality and they were told how the use of polythene bags polluted the environment
and they were requested to give up the use of polythene carry-bags. People
showed great interest in the campaign. Many of them promised never to use
polythene bags in future. The campaign was a great success. Everyone in the
locality praised the Samity members for their good work.
