 Subject Verb Agreement এর নিয়ম গুলো দেওয়া হল । আশাকরি তোমাদের উপকারে লাগবে ।

 Subject Verb Agreement

1. যদি কোন বাক্যে subject singular হয় তবে verb singular হবে এবং subject plural হলে  verb plural হবে ।আবার দুই বা ততোধিক subject    ‘ and’ দ্বারা যুক্ত হলে plural verb বসে।  যেমন -

1. He is happy. (2) They are happy (3) Ratan and Samir are happy.

2. যদি দুটি বা তার বেশি singular subject ‘ and’ দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় কিন্তু তাদের আগে each/every  থাকে, তাহলে singular  verb বসে।

যেমন – 1. Each boy and each girl was present there.

2. Every man, woman and child was happy.

  

3. দুটি singular subject যদি একটিমাত্র ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে বোঝায় ,তাহলে verb টি singular হবে। যেমন –

1. Bread and Butter is my favourite.  

** এরকম আরো কিছু জোড় শব্দ (pair of nouns) :  Rice and Curry/ Horse and carriage/ Hammer and Sickle/ Crown and Glory

2. The Headmaster and President of the school is coming.

কিন্তু , The Headmaster and the President of the school are coming.

একই ব্যক্তিকে বোঝালে একবার article বসে , কিন্তু আলাদা ব্যক্তিকে বোঝালে দুবার article বসে। 

4. যদি দুটি subject , as well as/with/ together with/ along with/accompanied by/ led by/ headed by/ guided by/ governed by ইত্যাদি দিয়ে যুক্ত হয় , তবে verb টি প্রথম   subject  অনুযায়ী বসবে । যেমন –

1. Rahim as well as his friends was punished.

5.  কিছু subject  যেগুলো আকারে singular কিন্তু অর্থের দিক থেকে plural, সেগুলির পরে plural verb বসে। যেমন – Police, people, poultry, cattle, folk, swine, dozen

উদাহরন : (1) The police are watching the house. (2) People have to obey the laws. (3) Three dozen make thirty six.

6. কিছু subject  যেগুলো আকারে plural কিন্তু অর্থের দিক থেকে singular, সেগুলির পরে singular verb বসে। যেমন – News,wages,physics,statistics, politics,economics, measles, mumps, tuberculosis.

উদাহরন : (1) Measles is a disease caused by a virus . (2) The news is true. (3) Physics is a branch of science (4) Statistics is an interesting subject.

** মনে রাখতে হবে physics,statistics, politics,economics এগুলি যখন বিষয়(subject) বোঝাবে তখন singular verb ব্যবহৃত হবে। কিন্তু যদি এই শব্দগুলির আগে possessive adjective যেমন my/his/your বা Article The বসে , তখন অর্থের পরিবর্তন ঘটে এবং তখন এগুলির পর plural verb বসে ।যেমন –

1. His politics are not good. (2) My mathematics are week (3) His statistics are correct.

7. যদি দুটি subject, Not only... but also/Neither ... nor/ Either ... or  দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় , তাহলে verb , তার পাশে বসা subject অনুযায়ী বসে।

যেমন –(1)  Neither he nor I am going to the market.

(2) Neither you nor I was there.

(3) Either Subir or his friends have done this work.

8. Person অনুযায়ী subject বসাবার নিয়ম প্রথমে second person (you, your, yours) , পরে third person (he, she, they, him, her, them, his, her, hers, their, theirs, it, its) এবং শেষে first person ( I, we, me, us, my, mine, our, ours) [231].  যেমন – Either you or he or I shall go to school.

কিন্তু দোষ স্বীকারের ক্ষেত্রে প্রথমে first person, পরে third person এবং শেষে second person বসে [132] ।.  যেমন – I, he and you have done the wrong.

** খেয়াল রাখতে হবে, উপরের দুটি ক্ষেত্রেই কিন্তু Verb, Plural হবে। যেমন –

You, he and I are good friends.

9. বাক্যের মধ্যে যে অংশ মূল বাক্যের গঠনের সাথে যুক্ত নয় তাকে parenthesis বলে। বাক্যের মধ্যে যে অংশ Paranthetically ব্যবহৃত হবে , তার subject অনুযায়ী verb বসবে না ।যেমন – (1) He not his friends is responsible.

(2) Not he but his friends are responsible .

10. যদি বাক্যের subject,  Each/Either/Neither/Everybody/Somebody/ Nobody/Anybody/Someone/No one/Everyone/Anyone/ Everything/Something/Nothing/ Anything ইত্যাদি হয় , তবে singular verb ব্যবহৃত হয় ।যেমন –

(1) Everybody knows that the sun rises in the east.

(2) I invited Ram and Shyam but neither has come.

** খেয়াল রাখতে হবে,Each/Anybody/Everyone / Anyone  ইত্যাদির sex যখন নির্দিষ্ট ভাবে বলা না থাকে , তখন Masculine Gender ব্যবহৃত হয় । যেমন –

Someone among his friends likes singing.

11. Each of/Either of/Neither of/Everyone of/ One of  এর পর Noun/ Pronoun  plural হয় কিন্তু verb  singular হয়। যেমন –

(1) Each of the boys was present there.

(2) One of the girls was ill.

(3) Either of the mobiles is stolen.

12. যদি বাক্যের subject Few/A few  /Many/Both/ ইত্যাদি হয় , তবে Plural verb ব্যবহৃত হয় ।যেমন –

(1)Many were invited in the party.

(2) Both are handsome.

13. Both of/A few of/few of/Many of/Many/A great many/ A good many/ A number of/A large number of   ইত্যাদি এর পর Noun ও verb  plural হয়। যেমন –

(1) A great many girls are going to the market.

(2) Many of the members were absent.

(3) A number of suggestions were made.

** খেয়াল রাখতে হবে,

(1) Many a এর পর Noun  ও verb  singular হয়। যেমন –

     Many a politician has promised to make changes.

(2) The number of এর পর noun plural, verb singular হয়। যেমন –

The number of people lined up for tickets was two hundred.

14. All/ all of/ some/ some of/most/ most of/a lot of/ lots of/ enough/half of/one third of/ two thirds of/ three fourths of/ এর পর যদি countable noun থাকে তবে তা plural হবে এবং verb টিও plural হবে ।

(1)All men are mortal.

(2) Lots of protesters were present there.

** কিন্তু যদি uncountable noun থাকে তবে verb টি singular হবে ।যেমন –

Two thirds of the population there has contracted AIDS.

15. Introductory There/ It থাকলে verb টি there/it এর পরে বসা subject অনুযায়ী স্থির করা হয়। যেমন –

There were many accidents last year.

16.  Numeral + Plural Noun  এর সাথে কোন definite unit / distance/weight/ height  দেওয়া থাকে তবে verb টি singular হবে ।

Fifty thousand rupees is a good amount .

** কিন্তু যদি different unit থাকে তবে verb টি plural হবে ।যেমন –

Fifty thousand rupees have been spent for the construction work.

17. –Wh  যদি relative pronoun হিসাবে ব্যবহৃত হয় তবে verb টি এর antecedent এর উপর ভিত্তি করে বসবে ।

(1) One of the problems which were discussed was pointed out by him.

(2) I, who am a doctor, practice here.

18.  যদি অপূর্ণ ইচ্ছা (unfulfilled wish) / শর্ত (condition) ইত্যাদি বর্তমান পরিস্থিতিতে if/as if/ as though/ I wish/ It is time/ it is high time প্রভৃতির সঙ্গে to be verb সহযোগে বসে, তাহলে subject এর number/person যাই থাক না কেন, সর্বদা were বসবে।

(1) If I were you, I would have request them to complete the work.

(2) I wish I were a bird.

19. যখন কোন clause/phrase, subject হিসাবে বসে তখন singular verb বসে।

(1) To err is human

(2) That he is honest is known to all.
