PSC Clerkship (Main) English
1. Translate the following passage into English.
Answer :
A rainbow in the colour of a peacock’s feather appeared
in the sky. When I looked up again, that sight caught my eyes at first. I went
out to call in Abin to show that sight, but Abin was not there. There were no
co-passengers around;the entire deck was desolated.
2. Summaries the following passage in not more than
70 words.
The first
thing that men learned, as soon as they began to study nature carefully, was
that some events take place in regular order and that the same causes always
give rise to the same effects. The sun always rises on one side and sets on the
other side of the sky; the changes of the moon follow one another in the same
order at regular intervals; the water always flows downhill; fire always burns.
Thus the notion of an order of nature and of fixity in the relation of cause
and effect between things gradually entered the minds of men. So far as such
order prevailed, it was felt the things were explained; while the things that
could not be explained were said to happen by accident.
But the more
carefully nature has been studied, more widely has order been found to prevail,
while what seemed disorder has proved to be nothing but complexity, until at
presents no one is so foolish as to believe that anything happens by chance;
everybody admits that all we really mean is that we do not know its cause or
the reason why that particular thing happens.
Answer : While
studying the nature, the early men learnt that the natural events were
occurring in regular order. Thus, the idea of an orderliness of natural events
and their cause and effect relation were fixed in their minds. Hence, the
ultimate facts of nature were ascribed to accident. But today we know that
natural disorders are nothing but complexities, the causes of which are unknown
to us.
3. Suppose, you are Mr. XYZ. As the
president of a voluntary organization, you have recently visited a slum area in
your city. Write a report in not more than 200 words mentioning the problems of
the slum area .
As
a president of the socio-cultural group called ‘Prochesta’ ,
I visited Rangil Bagan , a slum area with around 250
families. These families are mostly deprived and poor, surviving with low
literacy rate, malnutrition, hunger and lack of sanitation.
It was much shocking to learn that no government
officials had ever visited them, even though this area is just a few kilometers
from the district Head Quarters. In my first sight of this area, I saw children
were playing with plastic bags immersed in waste. The area is situated in low
line land and therefore during monsoon season, water starts filling in this
area , spreading all kinds of water borne
diseases. People didn’t have clean drinking water. The toilets there were in
pathetic conditions. In the Government ration shop, there was a line of
customers all echoing the same complaint about how they are duped by the
storekeepers.
There
are common findings of my visit to the area. These findings indicate towards
the upsetting neglect of the area by the authorities. Government has taken some steps but they need to be
implemented well and there should be a proper planning to intervene in
the present status.
___ MR. XYZ, President, ‘Prochesta’
